Those NG troops are not walking around with live ammo.
If they are walking around with magazines in them they are most likely ready to go. Of course, sidearms are harder to see that. To be honest, I never carried a weapon for security without ammo, what would be the point?
Whenever I did security work, sidearms were always hot with no safety, rifles magazines loaded but safety on at least while in secured areas.

No they are not “ready to go” just because a magazine is in them. It is common practice for them to have an empty magazine inserted when they are armed.

Not my experience but I wasn't in the national guard, of course I am talking about actually on security duty.
Most of the pics I see of them sleeping and in staging areas they have no magazine.
Also, I said sidearms, we ALWAYS carried them hot.
Carrying a weapon on duty with no ammo is just plain dumb.

I wasn’t in the NG either but I have been involved in their deployment and use multiple times. They do not have ammo on their person.

Well, even active duty we just didn't fling ammo in our cars at the end of the day.
Being on duty (security) and having no ammo is stupid, having an empty magazine is retarded.
What are they going to do, throw their gun at someone? If they are not on security detail, no reason to have ammo.

Not sure, but if those stupid procedures are being used... its a good way of getting people hurt if something goes wrong. Carrying a gun with no ammo is much worse than not carrying a gun at all.
If anyone of them wanted to do harm, they could just bring their own ammo. Not sure I see the difference.

The risk assessment on this was probably signed off by a 1-Star. If ammo was allocated some supply type has it locked up.
