Nuclear Forces to return to Cold War status?

If the order comes, the B-52s will return to a ready-to-fly posture not seen since the Cold War.

BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. — The U.S. Air Force is preparing to put nuclear-armed bombers back on 24-hour ready alert, a status not seen since the Cold War ended in 1991.

The rest of the story is at the link.

I remember the Cold War pretty well. I dated a girl for a while in college whose Father was an officer at Barksdale. I remember visiting there one weekend in 1979. B52's taking off and landing all day and night, training just in case the order ever came.

Was definitely a scarier time.

Why are we at this point? Have I missed something recently?

I stayed at Barksdale in the bunker by the flight line in my Civil Air Patrol days.

I remember them doing night training. 8-12 BUFFs line up and depart at 2100 as we try to fall asleep.
Then bright and early at 0430 they gave us our wake up call.

They’re getting ready to be put on alert?

Shouldn’t they always be ready to be on alert?

They still fly all the time.

I would guess N. Korea and perhaps a bit of Putin's Russia tricks. They've been building up and getting a little friskier, if you haven't noticed.

ETA: 24 hour alert status is different from what we've been doing the last 26 years.

They sure do. I have also seen an increase in B2 bombers as well as refueling planes.

Maybe we're in it to win it the next time we have to go to it. Prevent defense is no longer a winning strategy. Kinda like football in most cases.

i had a great uncle that flew bombers for SAC out of Fairbanks, Alaska. They had someone in the air 24/7. He would fly to the very edge of Soviet airspace, sometimes into it, to frick with the Russians and see what their reaction time and tactics were. The Soviets would fly wingtip to wingtip, the pilots would eye each other, and flip the bird or insult their mothers. Our bombers turned around, the fighters peeled off. Rinse and repeat. It was a game then, it is a game now.

Our capability with a bomber is that it can take off from a US base and drop a bomb anywhere in the world and return to the same base. Our ICBMs can hit any target within 30 mins.

As old as these are, they have been completely modernized and are some beautiful old birds that can cause lots of havoc.

The B-52 is the perfect example of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

The B-52 - 65 years after its first flight - has been and will probably remain (forever) the most legendary combat aircraft of all time.

ready-to-fly posture

Somebody help me out, but aren't all planes technically in a "ready-to-fly posture" at all times?

My dad lives about a mile from the back fence of Barksdale. I love going home every year and hearing that sound and watching the touch and go's.
