Very sketchy situation with a very distant relative wanting help claiming her son is graduating at Benning this weekend and has a deferment on AIT until he graduates HS next year.

Can you go to basic between 11-12 grade years?

You could when I joined in the 90's. It was called split option or something. You did basic before your sr year.

I will defer to experts, but I'm fairly certain the answer is an absolute no. You can enlist before 18 with parental consent, but they aren't sending your arse to basic until you are done with high school.

Yes, but I think it's only for the Guard or Reserves. Not sure that program applies to active duty.

Done with high school means graduation or dropping out. As far as I know, they’ll send your arse to GED classes in basic and won’t let you go beyond boot camp until you obtain it. I seem to remember guys going to class from my unit. This was in 07. A lot of beers since then so I could be remembering incorrectly. I don’t remember anyone leaving boot camp to finish their senior year.

Can’t believe basic was 11 years ago......

Again, this was 20 years ago but regular army was eligible when I went through. Had a couple kids in my platoon doing this.

They will still accept GED holders? shite.

When I was looking at OCS last year, they were up my arse about academic performance. I thought entrance standards for both enlistment and commission had been increased greatly.

Ok

She did say he was going for reserves

This is a 40+ year removed relative making contact. I'm just trying to not get suckered.

It may be possible, but probably not a good idea.

Probably couldn't get your choice of MOS, or any enlistment bonus.

Someone has to cook and cut hair. Love those guys, but how specialized do they need to be?

OCS has emphasized academics over practical application for a while now. Definitely since I was in. It’s why you get those LTJG with degrees in arts and crafts commanding combat units.

Yes, but only if you are a reservist and enlist under the CiHS (Currently in High School) option.

Basically you go to basic between your junior and senior year, get assigned to a reserve unit where you drill during your senior year. Then, after graduating high school, you attend AIT.

I joined with a GED. It didn't limit my mos options (other than those that required college courses). I was just ineligible for a bonus. Still got choice of duty station which I squandered on Korea.

Korea sounds like a great choice unless you’re at the DMZ

Split option... I don't know if they still do it anymore.

I was at Casey. The ville was great but the weather and the field time sucked. The career counselor at MEPS told me it was the best duty station in the army and I was lucky to get the option.

I did, enlisted at the end of my Junior year, went to Ft. Benning as a split op. Split op is still current, probably over half the current cycle at Ft. Sill are split op Reserve and NG.

I know someone who did it for the National Guard the summer before their senior year of HS.
