CNN: Pence on Trump and Jan 6

quote:

(CNN)Former Vice President Mike Pence acknowledged on Thursday that he and former President Donald Trump maintain starkly different views of the riot that unfolded at the US Capitol on January 6.

Speaking at a dinner hosted by the Hillsborough County Republican Committee in New Hampshire, the former vice president said he and Trump have spoken "many times" since leaving office and he remains proud of their accomplishments.

But, Pence added, "I don't know if we'll ever see eye to eye on that day."

Trump is more obsessed than ever with 2020 election and is brushing off allies who are telling him to move on

While Trump has repeatedly downplayed the insurrection and recently pressured Republican lawmakers not to support a bipartisan commission to probe the attack, Pence offered a somewhat different take during his Thursday appearance in New Hampshire, which comes as the former vice president weighs a White House bid of his own in 2024.

"January 6 was a dark day in the history of the United States Capitol," he told the crowd.

Pence was rushed out of the Senate chamber as rioters calling for his death stormed the halls of Congress on January 6, while Trump remained at the White House watching the insurrection unfurl. The two men did not speak for several days after the attack and have since gone their separate ways -- including on Inauguration Day for President Joe Biden, when Pence remained in Washington to attend Biden's swearing-in ceremony and Trump left for Florida before it began.

Despite their occasional phone conversations, Trump has continued to criticize Pence and then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in his post-presidential statements for allowing Congress to certify the 2020 election outcome.

As recently as May 15, Trump accused Pence in a statement circulated by his Save America PAC of lacking the "courage" to help overturn the election results.

Typical politician, let's be strong and bold except when it's time to be strong and bold.

Yep, bottom line when he was called to act for something that mattered he turn into a little bitch. And he’ll forever be known for that.

Depends on your perspective. He was under immense pressure from Trump and the GOP to violate his oath of office and the constitution and didn’t. In that context, he did his job in the face of adversity.

He was called to do something he had no authority to do and commit what amounts to a federal felony

This is the absolute wrong approach. If you are convinced there is fraud, it needs to be rooted out and the system fixed.

Beyond that, sure move on since it isn't as obvious a remedy once they declare the election a sham.

Mike Pence stabbed us all in the back. No doubt he was the white house leaker the whole time.

All he to do was send the certification back to the state legislatures because there were competing sets of electors. Instead he choose to go along with Democrats and their "muh insurrection" narrative as his excuse to certify the stolen election.

He now stands along side Romney pretending to be principled when really both are just backstabbing pieces of shite.

I can't believe there are still people who think that Mike Pence could have prevented the Electoral College votes from being counted.

Had he attempted to do so, he would have been removed from his presiding position by simple majority vote, and Grassley or another Senator would have presided over the counting.

He would have easily been overridden by the Senate and prevented from doing so.

Then that’s exactly what he should’ve done and then the next person in line‘s being held to the same accountability that there was absolute fraud in this election and it can’t be certified. That’s the problem nobody stands up. Make it hard for them not to. The only reason we’re in this bullshite now for the last 40 years is because of lesser men.

This is just not true. Each state had one set of electors submitted by the terms laid out by the state. You had people who were Trump electors in states they didn’t win send their names in. Throes aren’t valid electors at all. There is no dispute to send back to the state.
