I don't think a thank you to the families who lost loved ones while defending our country is the right thing to do. You should instead, offer your condolences to them for their loss.
Thank you to someone implies that the person did something to be thanked for and in this case the only thing the families of the loss ones did was accept their death and move on. Don't thank them for that!
