They sort of "compromised" by allowing him to bow his head and "pray" during the anthem.
He claimed the anthem "conflicts" with his Islamic beliefs....go figure...America conflicting with Islam? How new. It was a sign of things to come.

He wasn't protesting. He was just a misguided convert. He thought that Islam prevented him from respecting the flag as a symbol.
