Just one example. He only sent this to have his name put on letters to likely voters. Using taxpayer money.

there was the 47,039 letters Ardoin wrote on Sept. 20 to inform elderly and disabled voters who receive their ballots by mail that state law prohibits “voter harassment coercion or intimidation by candidates or third parties.” No other secretary of state had felt the need to mail such warnings to the voters on a list to which only he has access.

Serious question. Hows is that unlike any incumbent?
I had that thought initially as well. The conclusion I came to was this - what makes him different is that he was never elected. He was appointed when Schedler resigned, so in effect you have a candidate who never received the affirmation of the voters using taxpayer money to promote himself, unique to the position he is in and not available to other candidates.
Now, there is a larger conversation about elected officials campaigning on the job, using tax payer money. However, I would consider that different than what occurred here.
What he should have done was have the first assistant push out the informationals, or at the very least remove his name from the informationals and use “Office of the...”
IMO.

Renee Free all the way.

Unfamiliar. Will have to look into him/her. Can you give some background?

I’ll be voting for Ardoin.. I’ve known him for quite some time and he’s an honest guy that loves the whole process.. he will not be using this as a spring board to anything else.. this job requires someone that is really a committed elections nerd or to hire someone who is.. he was hired to be that guy and will continue as the secretary..

If he wins, I hope that is the case. In my opinion, I don’t think it’s a question about honesty or political maneuvering as much as it is his understanding the complexities of the job. That mailer was an easy one, and he blundered it. What does that say about his possible job performance in the future?

It wasn’t the best move politically but I bet his intentions were also true.. He loves the elections process and has dedicated his life to the political process from running (and losing) to lobbying and in the past decade or so the realm of administration.. He truly is the best candidate running for this position..

if you are running for a seat that has control over elections and you don’t see a conflict of interest issue when basically promoting yourself at the taxpayers expense, you aren’t the right person for the job.
So by this logic, he should be running? Does that go for any SOS incumbent?

?
ETA: Look a couple of posts up for my explanation of why this is different. I still don’t understand the first part of your question though.

think I’ll vote for Ardoin, but I could certainly be convinced otherwise. My motivation is simple. He’s an R. He’s got the best chance of winning as the incumbent. Ergo. The best chance to avoid having a Democrat count our votes in the next Gubanatorial election. I don’t trust a Democrat counting votes or money.
This is pretty much where I am. Although the Turkey Creek argument is sound. I killed a couple of deer there as a kid.
Does anyone have any recent polling info? The ones I've seen have been all over the place and without any overriding pluses or minuses for any candidate I'd likely vote for the R in the best position. (Planning to do the deed this afternoon, wish someone would sell me on a candidate here.)

I'm voting for Rick Edmonds. The dude has fought tirelessly in the House fighting our sleazeball Gov. He'll do the same as SOS. I have no doubt.
