Governing article

Louisiana has more government employees per capita than New York, Texas, and California.

Louisiana has 97 state employees per 10k residents. New York has 91, California has 61, and Texas has 65.

Need to make some cuts, Louisiana.

In Louisiana working for the state is very often a family tradition.

Also look at our local governments. These are just jobs programs. "Throw me something Mister!"

Not to mention all the state contractors they have to hire at big rates to actually do the jobs the state employees don’t do.

My wife worked for the state of LA at one time in West Jeff. Post Katrina, there were multiple people still on leave being paid a full salary. in 2007.

As to the OPs point, perhaps the number of parishes the state has accounts for the excessive number of state employees? we have more parishes than NY and CA have counties, so perhaps that accounts for the disparity with those states.

So did I, and no they most certainly did not. Unless by "they" you mean someone other than the guy instructing.

Best thing that could happen to Louisiana would be getting annexed and run by Texans.

having 64 or whatever parishes is one of the biggest rackets imaginable. it's legit insane that a small state with a declining population maintains that many intermediary governmental bodies

Increased property taxes, gross receipts tax, 6%+ state sales tax, and no exemption on industrial property taxes for school millages would immediately follow

I'd still be down

Its probably better to use the State and Local number as the measuring stick, as some states provide services at the state level instead of the local level or vice versa.

Having said that, Louisiana sits at 284 State/Local per 10K population. Other states numbers

California - 228
Florida - 213
Georgia - 216
Idaho - 227
Indiana - 200
Maine - 215
New York - 316
Texas - 209
Mississippi - 304

Huh, what do you know, the crappier a state is run the more employees the state has.
