But in terms of the original point, Obamanomics, Obama was an economic dolt.

Walgreens invested $140 million dollars in Theranos. Multiple venture capital firms invested money that pushed Theranos’ valuation to $9 billion. Theranos, and Holmes, were Silicon Valley darlings for years. Yeah, it was all BS, but many non-economic dolts poured and lavished money on Theranos. The point? This OP, like most of Bengal’s threads, are complete shite.

Truth. When Walgreens forwarded capital, as with many ventures in the industry, there were known risks. Fraud was not suspected. By 2015, Theranos WAS UNDER INVESTIGATION by Obama's own CMS. It would be about like appointing Jeff Skilling from Enron as Ambassador in August 2001, after initial financial analyses revealed a highly questionable corporate situation.

Hardly in a thread started by Bengal. Between you and I, sure, but not by the OP.

Holmes was one of nine ambassadors appointed that year, and that was done in May of 2015. The WSJ didn't publish its expose on Theranos until October of that year. The company still had a valuation of $9 billion when Obama appointed her as one of those nine ambassadors.

There were plenty of warning signs prior to this. Neither Walgreens nor Safeway listened to the many detractors in their ranks about the minilabs that Holmes was pitching. Hell, the constant veinous draws should have been a sufficient warning in many ways.

The wheels didn't start to come off for Theranos until October of 2015. Obama appointed her in May of 2015. That is the truth of it.

Under a heavily guarded report that was released to no one and cited mostly shoddy lab practices as far as the outside world knew. The investigation was still underway, but there were no published findings that the administration would have been able to utilize to NOT nominate her at the time.

And this thread also doesn't acknowledge that she was removed from that role once the SEC investigations began.

You and I may be searching for truth, but we are some of the few actually doing it.

The point of the thread was that Obama was a dumbass for appointing Holmes. A lot of very smart people got scammed by Holmes and Obama was hardly alone in this.

Well the truth is she had a JLaw face, a Boris Karloff voice, an Enron presentation, and Bernie Madoff morals

But in all seriousness, there were many troubling questions in the scientific community re: Theranos by 2015. I know because I was approached to invest at that point.

It seems shortly after that, mainstream business articles began to appear rehashing a litany of concerns arising. Can't remember for certain, but it sure seems like those publications were 1stQ or early second Q of the year.

Just remember it was shortly after the decision to pass on our investment "opportunity" that the articles came out. Certainly was earlier than Oct'15.

But Obama was a guy who thought Pediatricians took out tonsils, and surgeons were paid $50K/leg amputation. So perhaps it's harsh to expect he'd recognize Holmes as a possible fraud in May'15.

She was a spinster of the worst sort, my friend. Her reckoning took entirely too long to come to pass.

I think Carreyrou cited something like pathology blog or some site as the guy that originally tipped him to the story. So I know there were articles floating around, but nothing that actually got traction prior to the Journal's article.

The one thing I won't argue with you is that Obama showed his arse in so many ways during his presidency. I hate having to defend the guy because I was not much of a fan, but this board has started skewing SO far right in recent years that some balance has to happen, .

Here's one:
Scientists are skeptical about the secret blood test that has made Elizabeth Holmes a billionaire

I believe there were a couple of others in the Mar-Apr timeframe. Could be mixing other analysis I was reading. Don't think so though because I recall the material coming up after we decided against doing anything. Confirmed our decision after the fact.

The sad thing is Walgreens had already started using them in their stores.. and people were using their faulty tests to make medical decisions... she’s lucky, I assume nobody has died because of that

They probably knew it was shite and didn't care. I fricking hate Walgreen's. Overpriced and shitty service. Anyone that had a clue about the science behind it knew it was impossible. Especially for the prices. That's why they were so vague and secretive about their proprietary methods. It didn't hurt that I was a double major in biology and chemistry and did extremely well in med school. But I'd think people would've consulted with some people that knew about this shite before they invested. frick them for being stupid. I was basically told I was a dumbass hick and it would be over my head if they tried to explain it and I'd regret my decision not to get involved.

Needless to say, I was quite pleased when the shite hit the fan. Damn, I'd love to revisit that conversation with that rep.

ETA...I'm assuming this was the same group. It was finger stick and claimed to be able to do all this shite and they were using the "well Walgreens and Walmart thought it was a good idea". I had never heard of them at the time.
