As recently as 2010 Texas was the fifth-leading coal producing state in America, mostly of the low grade lignite variety. Today there are only seven operating coal mines in the state and nobody's regretting the decline in mining and the shuttering of coal-fired power plants. The last thing we need in America is a surge in atmospheric carbon gases, in light of the recent turbulent turn to the climate.
