Like clockwork: New Zealand rushing to enact gun restrictions after shooting

Ardern said that the “worst act of terrorism on our shores” had exposed a range of weaknesses in New Zealand’s gun laws.
Speaking after her weekly Cabinet meeting Monday evening local time, Ardern told reporters that ministers had agreed “in principle” to reform gun laws.
“Within 10 days of this horrific act of terrorism we will have announced reforms which will, I believe, make our community safer,” she said.
While acknowledging that “for a short period” planned reforms might create uncertainty for some gun owners, Ardern said: “I strongly believe that the vast majority of gun owners in New Zealand will agree with the sentiment that change needs to occur.”
Earlier Monday, popular New Zealand e-commerce website TradeMe ended the sale of semiautomatic guns on its online marketplace.
“We have listened to public sentiment following Friday’s terrorist attack in Christchurch and decided to remove all semi-automatic firearms sales and parts associated,” TradeMe wrote in a statement.

New Zealand will be used as an example by anti gun people in our country.

Typical Hysterical reaction from a woman

Well . . . Australia and the UK did the same thing after mass shootings. And it worked for them.

A horse got out of the barn. Better hurry up and shut the door.

If that government read the shooters manifesto he emailed to them. Instead of ignoring it and censoring it. they would realize they are doing exactly what he wanted them to do. So take the guns, and let him win some more. A brilliant idea.

Let’s make people more vulnerable to creeps like the perpetrator by taking away a means to defend themselves completely!

What is your definition of "it worked"?

Australia has had mass shootings since. UK is going through waves of knife attacks and is talking knife control.
It's like a person with murderous intent is not slowed down by laws. Weird.

Oh yeah. Haven’t seen any other violent attacks in the UK or record high knife crime since.
Australia is smaller than Texas. It can surely be compared with a country that holds 94% larger of a population with more diversity.

I had assumed NZ virtually had no guns like basically everywhere else. What exactly were their gun laws to begin with?

I heard this second-handidly off of the radio, so excuse me if I got anything wrong. To my understanding, the laws are very stringent. You have to get all kinds of licenses to own a shotgun or rifle. You have to take hours of classes, with tests given that you have to score 90% and above on to pass. The govt. has to come check where you’re keeping it stored in your home to see if it’s acceptable before they pass your licensing.
Handguns are illegal to have in your home. You can only operate one if you’re part of a shooting club that competes competitively, where you’re required to log an amount of hours shooting annually. The gun must remain locked up at the clubs’ location when not shooting.

Thanks
Seems very reasonable for a non US country (reasonable as in no need to make it even more restrictive).

Other than the storage inspection and provided the licenses are valid for 5+ years (preferably lifetime) sounds pretty solid.
Did the shooter get his weapons in NZ?

And the UK is hard at work banning knives right now.

Being on an island has to limit the possibilities.
