Right now we have a mask shortage. Medical staff don’t want to reuse them because they are afraid of putting themselves at risk. So what are some good options to sterilize these used masked without tossing them in a washer and compromising their effectiveness? I’m remember working in a virology lab back in college and using a machine to sanitize flasks using UV light. Could that be adapted and used on a larger scale where masks aren’t discarded but rather shipped off to a local lab for sterilization and repackaging and returned for use in 24 hours or so?

We're already reusing masks. I used the same N95 mask all of last week because our clinic on has a handful and there is a national shortage. This is a fricking disaster

I've already solved the problem. I don't wear a mask because I'm not afraid.

A question I haven't heard asked- how effective are masks outside of a regularly sterilized environment?

Zach, I like you, man, but you’re predictable.
You’re not caring for infected patients, are you?

Uh, how can I hurt infected patients by going outside and meeting all the people I want?

What about a mask made of materials that could be autoclaved routinely like surgical tools?

People, especially those under the age of 50, who are mostly healthy, do not need to be wearing masks. I went to the store yesterday evening and saw a couple of people who appeared to be in their 20's wearing masks, and I just shook my head in amazement.

People are so gullible and scared, just because a bunch of known liars on TV told them how to think.

But you dont have a personal shortage because you knew this was coming in late november and have been preparing since then by hoarding masks, and getting more ordered at your clinic.

Ok, so let’s get this back on track. We need ideas to sanitize masks for reuse. Give me some ideas. Throw them out there

We put in a large order in January and only got about 1/4 of what we requested. Federal government should have started ramping up production in December

Do you think that medical staff are being 'fraidy cats for wearing masks?

I went to the hospital this morning to change car keys with my wife. No one on the staff was wearing masks.
I went through the ER entrance which restricts everyone. I saw lots of staff. None were wearing masks.

They’ve probably tested positive.

Why weren't you preparing in November ?

By the way , the Feds don't produce masks .

My wife's hospital hasn't had shortages , she ordered extras in November just in case.

Sounds like you have a poor manager.

I did. What fabrics does NASA use that could resist an autoclave sanitization?

I think wearing a mask outside of the hospital is ridiculous, unless you have a health condition. But I'll try to help with your question.

Get some "Thieves" Essential Oil, mix it in with some water, put it in a spray bottle and spray the mask down every night before you go to bed.

It kills germs, and being that it is natural, there are no chemicals to harm you. It was discovered to work against the Bubonic Plague, by some thieves who would use it to go into sick peoples houses and steal from them, without getting sick. Yes, that is a true story, and it's why they call it "Thieves".

The stuff works. Try it.

They have the power to subsidize production of anything they want. See: South Korea

Is her hospital in a major city? Check back with me in 2 weeks

Btw, I'm calling bullshite on them ordering extra masks in November considering we didn't even know the virus existed at that point.
