The optics COULD look better, but only because most people are morons.

Actually, the optics could hardly look worse. And they were trying to appease morons when they dropped "Antebellum", so it is the moron's optics they should be concerned about.

On the legal side - did they actually use "Lady A" to refer to themselves? I did a search limited to before 2020, and only found writers/fans using it as an abbreviation. Might have to hit a way-back machine and view their website to see if they ever published anything with it.

And does anyone know what the law is on a trademark if you don't actually use it for X years?

A word that only means pre american civil war

Antebellum is not exclusive to the Civil War, there is an antebellum period to every war ever fought, it simply means "pre war"

It appears they held the trademark before the singer started going as Lady A. Details are missing.

She's been using Lady A since the 80s.

quote:

inging at age 5 with her musical family, and her performance career began in the 1980s as a backup vocalist in a Motown revue band.[2] She played in the Motown group called Lady A & the Baby Blues Funk band for 18 years and then went solo on tour in the Pacific Northwest and Mississippi Delta regions.[3]

She has released five solo albums, debuting in 2010. She operates Lady A Productions, serving gospel and blues artists. She hosts two music shows on NWCZ Radio online: Gumbo & Gospel, and Black N Blues (the B side)

They (Lady Appropriation) will not win and should not try, its career suicide

ETA: Lady Antebellum was formed in 2006, Lady A has been active under that name since at least 1992, if not since the 80s....

How tf does Lady Antebellum have a trademark infringement?
