Why would a benevolent God create us and have us born into a world where we are already damned from birth before ever opening our eyes?
For His own glory as the omnipotent creator who is due all honor and worship.

God's goodness does not mean He owes anyone happiness, peace, joy, good health, a long life, or salvation from eternal destruction, nor is it inherently evil for God to destroy one of His own creatures.

He created us, and He can do with us as He pleases without accruing any sort of moral culpability for our destruction, because it isn't immoral to destroy what is your own. We are free to be creative in art, for instance, where we are not morally culpable for the destruction of the picture we paint or the sculpture we form. We are God's creations, and He can do with us as He pleases.

What you seem to be getting at is the concept of moral innocence. If your question is coming from the same place as many others, perhaps you think that children are innocent and not worthy of damnation, and therefore for God to damn a child before it had the chance to reject God is cruel and even immoral.

If that's the case, you need to understand the doctrine of original sin. Original sin is the doctrine that God created a covenant with humanity's representative, Adam, that included promises of blessings and curses depending on his obedience to the terms of that covenant. Adam broke the covenant by sinning, and the result was that his guilt was passed down to all his posterity after him.

The covenant of grace was made between God the Father and Jesus Christ and all those who are in Him by faith, to save those with Adam's guilt by Jesus taking their sins on Himself on the cross, paying our debt and giving us His righteousness.

If it's not "fair" for any to be condemned by Adam's sin, then it isn't "fair" to be justified by Christ's obedience, and if that is true, then all are damned, because no one can obey the demands of God's law perfectly except for Jesus.

Thanks for that reply

One specific that throws me off
John 14:6
Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me’”

Looks very specific to me and I’m aware of contradictions to this but the above statement, reportedly from the mouth of Jesus, throws me off.

Is there an interpretation needed?

No problem. For clarity, are you asking me how John 14:6 can coexist with the idea of salvation by faith in the coming messiah for old testament believers that lived prior to the coming of Christ?
