I disagree on John - he did some great work in Gross Pointe Blank, for example (and others).
But, to answer your question, Jeremy Piven's parents ran an acting workshop in Evanston, IL, and may have used their connections to get the Cusacks (and Jeremy) their early jobs.
Strangely ironic in this case as the Pivens are of Ukrainian Jewish descent.
(ETA: Piven and Cusack have been close friends since High School.)
