One of the biggest reasons you don't want to talk in the first place is to avoid the police using your statements against you to make you look like a liar. If you lie to them—especially about something as easily verifiable as that—you make that pretty easy.

The correct phrase would be:

"I cannot recall with 100% clarity the answer to that question. I certainly do not wish to be guilty of misleading you so at this time I cannot answer that."

This includes not just arrestees and routine interviews, but also traffic stops. That's right, run a red light, and you have to turn over the names of your social media accounts.

Oh, and they're also telling people that they HAVE to provide their Social Security number on demand. LAPD is instructed to say "it's federal law".

Even most liberal judges will laugh that shite out of the room.

If a policeman is talking to you and you aren't under arrest or suspected of crime, you don't have to provide jack shite.

I have my doubts that any LAPD is asking for this

Honestly, I've got mine too.

It's so egregiously in violation of case law that short of relying on Celtic Dog for legal advice, I doubt anyone in the LA authorities is this stupid.

Meh. Get the frick off of social media. Anyone stupid enough to put their personal information out for the world to see and exploit deserves whatever happens to them.

Yeah, I think it’s more along the lines of if a report is filed for something online, a death threat, hazing, etc. That they may take down that information. Someone saw a copy of the card and made a narrative to get R’s pitch forks out and make us look stupid

If you are stopped for a traffic violation you are being detained. But, "I don't answer questions" works really well.

Depends on the state. There are a few in which you do have to give your name and ID.

If you don't know your state's laws regarding this the safest thing to do is provide name and I.D. and tell them that you are invoking your fifth amendment right to remain silent in response to all other questions.

I wouldn't recommend that.

If you try to get cute with them like that depending upon how motivated they are to spend time fricking with you on that particular day they will start asking questions that you can't reasonably say that to just to get you answering something.

It's easy. You have a right to remain silent. Just tell them that you are exercising it.
