House Bill 156 passed the upper chamber on a 26-11 vote. That bill carried by Rep. Roger Wilder, R-Denham Springs, would eliminate a requirement in state law that 16 and 17-year-old workers receive a 20-minute lunch break when they work five or more hours at a time.

Wilder's bill outraged Democrats and child labor advocates; but the sponsor, who owns a number of Smoothie King franchises in the Deep South, said he was simply trying to give workers more opportunity to earn wages while they're on the clock.

Come on man! He’s not going to give them an extra 20 min paid. Instead of being paid 6 hr over a 6 hr 20 min shift, they will be paid 6 hr over a 6 hr shift.

But he can now adjust schedules to not have to cover lunch breaks. That will save him a little money.

What percentage of smoothie king workers are 16 or 17, outside of school hours? 75%? More?

We all know how democrats are gonna spin this.

Correction, we all know how democrats are going to successfully spin this to their advantage.

It doesn't even have to be good to be better spin than the stupidity the author of the bill relied upon

What?

It’s a 30 minute break, don’t know where 20 came from. And if they only take a 29 minute break the government fines you more than you pay the teen.

So who is the real bad guy?

As a person who had jobs as a teenager under this law, I absolutely got paid 4hr 40m for my 5hr shift. If I have to be there, I would have rather gotten paid.

I guess you never worked as a teen. Prob why you seem like a soft person.

I was forced to take a 30 minute lunch break even if I didn’t want to. That’s bullshite. It’s 30 minutes off the clock btw. By law, the business didn’t have to pay me for my full time there.

There really is no way to spin removing a child labor law that has been in effect for over 50 years. HB 156 literally reads, "R.S. 23:213 is repealed in its entirety."

LINK - Link to the Bill.

What is La. R.S. 23:213?

§213. Recreation or meal period
No minor shall be employed, permitted, or suffered to work for any five-hour period without one interval of at least thirty minutes within such period for meals. If the period of work before the interval exceeds five hours by ten minutes or less, that difference shall be considered de minimis and shall not be considered a violation of this Section. Such interval shall not be included as part of the working hours of the day. This interval shall be thirty minutes. If the length of the meal break is at least twenty minutes, the difference between the actual break time and the required thirty-minute break time shall be considered de minimis, and shall not be considered a violation of this Section. The break shall be documented, using the employer's normal timekeeping system. If a minor fails to clock in or out for a work period or meal break, and a time edit is necessary, the time edit shall be documented and acknowledged in writing by the minor and the manager who performs the time edit.

We're repealing a child labor protection that requires that minors be provided a 30 minute break if they are scheduled to work a five hour period. There's no way to "spin" this.

I wonder why a guy who owns Smoothie Kings would want to repeal a child labor law?

So you want to be at work for 6 hours and get paid for 5.5?

Yeah. 20 minutes at a minimum wage job really isn't going to move the needle for you, as it relates to income.

I'd argue eliminating meddlesome bureaucratic bullshite like this is pretty much the bedrock of what "conservatism" should be.

Although, I'm not so naive as to not understand that Louisiana's legislative "republicans" are happy to be as meddlesome as they can be in many other areas.

I'm just not gonna gripe about eliminating silliness like this.

Muh, they want our kids starving in sweat shops for their profits!

If you're only performing 5.5 hours of physical labor, you should only get paid for 5.5 hours of physical labor. You're not "at work" if you're not physically performing work.

My opinion is irrelevant to the terrible spin being used.

You want to know why Republicans lose and are the minority party? Letting people like this idiot have a mouthpiece to make Republicans all look like 85-IQ types.
