Not a dumb question, as they probably will do just that if it goes too far down discovery that they don’t want to get into. Probably won’t affect operations that much.
That said, it’s kind of like settling a lawsuit, in that some people will see it as the pragmatic approach to keep from racking up litigation costs and others will see it as a tacit admission of guilt
