To be fair the overwhelming majority of their coastline is incompatible with ports. A lot of people don't realize how high Africa is for the most part above sea level. Which also results in having basically zero navigable rivers to the interior
I point that out but the reality is still that the continent was always more backwards than it should have been. At some point in the future we will look back on this time and laugh at The quaint and silly View people had about the different races

Interesting. Makes sense, but their inability to do much innovation wise would say they wouldn't have done much if they had more water access.
