Mother of God, these people are crazy.

quote:

“Jingle Bells,” one of the most well-known Christmas carols in the world, is now being called racist. A Boston University theater professor claims the Christmas carol has a “problematic history” because it was originally performed to make fun of African Americans. “The legacy of ‘Jingle Bells’ is one where its blackface and racist origins have been subtly and systematically removed from its history,” Kyna Hamill, a BU theater historian, wrote in her “Theatre Survey” research paper on the story of “Jingle Bells.”

quote:

“Although ‘One Horse Open Sleigh,’ for most of its singers and listeners, may have eluded its racialized past and taken its place in the seemingly unproblematic romanticization of a normal ‘white’ Christmas, attention to the circumstances of its performance history enables reflection on its problematic role in the construction of blackness and whiteness in the United States,” she wrote.

quote:

“Its origins emerged from the economic needs of a perpetually unsuccessful man, the racial politics of antebellum Boston, the city’s climate, and the intertheatrical repertoire of commercial blackface performers moving between Boston and New York,” Hamill wrote. The traces of blackface minstrel origins can be found in the music and lyrics, as well as the “elements of ‘male display,’ boasting, and the unbridled behavior of the male body onstage,” the author wrote. The song’s lyrics, which Hamill adds “display no real originality,” and reference things like “Miss Fanny Bright” and “dashing through the snow” connect the song to blackface dandy, according to the research paper. “Words such as ‘thro,’ ‘tho’t,’ and ‘upsot’ suggest a racialized performance that attempted to sound ‘southern’ to a northern audience,” Hamill wrote.

There's more in the article that goes on about this.

College professors and grad students will over examine anything for a paper and call it racist now.

We really need more STEM grads. They aren't writing crap like this.

'Baby It's Cold Outside' has seen very little play time this year because it was deemed sexist and rapey last year.

Even if every word the stupid frick wrote is true.............something being racist at some point in the past doesn't make it permanently racist no matter how many retarded liberals try to claim it.

Good. It's a very rapey song. I change the station every time it comes on because I'm tired of having to explain it to my daughter.

It is racist. Jingle Bells, Batman smells.

Batman, a man in an all black suit.

Obviously a representation of black people. Stereotyped as all being smelly from working in the fields all day for the white man.

Jingle bells is racist.

It is played constantly on 102.1 here in DFW. I have 4 different versions (singers) in a single day and that is only listening in the car running around town.

I agree it is rapey, but it is very much still on the air.

My wife loves it, oh yeah

why do some black people think we care that much about other races? we don't care about our own race that much.

I was more referring to TV commercials. The holiday channels on SiriusXM haven't played it much either. At least I can't recall it.

What's funny is, if people had any sense they'd realize that the song is literally STILL true today.

Variations of that conversation happen EVERY frickING WEEKENED and probably every fricking day THOUSANDS of times across America.............and 99.98% of them end in something perfectly normal. Either someone is getting laid or, some woman who doesn't want to frick is an ADULT and says "no".

.01% end in rape which is already illegal

The rest are women who aren't fricking adults.

Yet idiots want to set policy based upon the fact that the subset of childish women can't manage to say, "no, I think I'll go home"

I remember as a young child being confused at the feelings of racial superiority that this Christmas carol made me feel. I’m glad someone finally had the courage to put it in writing.

How is it legitimately rapey? Seriously?

It's about a guy trying to talk a girl into staying... that's not rapey.
