The legend of JFK only exists because he was assassinated. When he was killed, he basically became a martyr and history has been very kind to him considering the things he said and did.

In 1945, after touring some places in Germany, JFK said, “Anyone who has visited these places can imagine how in a few years, Hitler will emerge from the hate that now surrounds him and come to be regarded as one of the most significant figures ever to have lived. There was something mysterious about the way he lived and died which will outlive him and continue to flourish. He was made of the stuff of legends.”

Wrong. Not even a scintilla of evidence of that happening. Kennedy was elected fair and square, back at a time when honor and honesty still mattered.

He had a weakness for women, for sure, but his type tended to be American celebrities and Hollywood starlets. He would never have consorted with a Communist spy.

In Texas, home of his running mate, Lyndon Johnson, he won by a margin of 46,000. Had Nixon carried both states, he would have won the electoral college, 270 to 252.

Over a half century after the fact, it’s impossible to judge what really happened. Multiple judges and one independent prosecutor, all of whom weighed in over the ensuing months in response to Republican complaints, determined that the vote tally was fair. But historian Robert Dallek, who wrote definitive biographies of JFK and LBJ,, concluded that Daley’s storied political machine “probably stole Illinois from Nixon”—though he reminds readers that Kennedy “would have won even without Illinois.” FBI agents who had placed wire taps on key Daley lieutenants (for entirely unrelated purposes) also had reason to believe that Illinois was rigged.

As for Texas, Dallek believes that “46,000 fraudulent votes would have been more than the most skilled manipulator of returns could have hidden.” Arguably, that most skilled manipulator was Kennedy’s running mate, Lyndon Johnson. And Robert Caro, the most prominent of LBJ’s biographers, is less certain of the results.

Johnson had almost certainly been involved in fishy elections before. In 1941, LBJ very likely out-polled his primary opponent in a special Senate election, only to see his political enemies steal the election in a classic case of ballot-box stuffing that dragged on for days on end. Seven years later, Johnson returned the favor in what was almost certainly a rigged election. Days after the election, officials in Precinct 13, Jim Wells county, discovered 200 uncounted votes, cast by voters who mysteriously signed in by alphabetical order, all in the same handwriting. It was the most egregious example of widespread, systematic fraud, most pronounced in counties under the thumb of Johnson’s political ally, George Parr. Caro has argued convincingly that Johnson’s team won by dubious means.

...But if anyone was capable of manipulating the returns in Texas, it was Lyndon Johnson. In 1960, Precinct 13 returned 1,144 votes for John Kennedy and just 45 for Richard Nixon. The Democrats carried Webb County by a lopsided margin of 10,059 to 1,802. In total, Kennedy-Johnson won the nine counties that Parr and his allies controlled by 21,691 votes...

Few historians take note of states where Democratic officials truly rigged the results with impunity: the Deep South, where a toxic mix of government-sanctioned violence, intimidation, poll taxes, literacy tests and fraud kept the vast majority of black voters away from the polls. John Kennedy carried Alabama by 80,000 votes and and defeated Nixon in Mississippi by just 34,801, though an uncommitted, ultra-segregationist slate garnered approximately 8,000 votes more than Kennedy. Had African Americans been able to vote, the results might very well have been much closer in both states. In 1960, Republicans—Nixon in particular—still performed well in black precincts, and in Alabama and Mississippi, it is more than plausible to assume that African Americans would have cast their lot against the ruling Democratic Party..."
