In his words, "Get off of my GD back."
You couldn't pay me to see that douche bag these days.

I don’t like comparing them to Skynyrd. Southern Rock Opera as a concept album was much more than about Skynyrd. Hood said before it was an arena rock concept album about growing up in the south in a different time from today and Skynyrds misunderstood influence on that time. “I grew up in North Alabama in the 1970’s, when dinosaurs still roamed the earth”.
Found it interesting how they saw that part of Alabama as different from the rest of the state. They used the distinction of North Alabama.

I like my rockers in the reactionary vein, thank you very much.

Neither could write a song 1/10 as good.

he is a brilliant song writer, his last 2 albums have not been his best but previously his stuff is amazing. its not country it Americana and trust me there is a differnce these days. The man wrote an amazing song dedicated to his friend who died in Iraq called Dress Blues. LINK

think of him as Americana but also think alt-country music in general falls under that umbrella.
The thing about “alt-country” going back to Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt, it is more “traditional country” than the corporate manufactured in a studio shite that gets radio play now.

There’s a great subset of Country/Americana//Texas country out there but it really doesn’t make the radio.
If you’re interested in some not terrible country:
Isbell
Colter Wall
Shane Smith and the Saints
Tyler Childress
Whiskey Myers
Sturgil Simpson
Charley Crockett
Uncle Lucious
Zach Bryan
Pecos and the Rooftops
Christ Stapleton (obviously the most famous)
None of them really fit into each other’s style but it’s what I listen to most often.

yea thats bullshite, talk about his politics but Wallen butchered a beautiful song

Mostly agree again, but I was talking less about Southern Rock Opera specifically and more about the swampy three guitar sound of Decoration Day and Dirty South. When they had all three guys they had a very throwback classic rock sound. Maybe it was more Mississippi Queen than straight skynyrd though.
I do think as they evolved it became apparent that Hood was more interested in writing either story songs or weirdo songs, Isbell left to do the singer songwriter thing, but Cooley songs are consistently great country rock.

Dapped, funnily enough I saw Stapleton play a bar with maybe 20 people in it and it was one of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen. Six months later he did the Timberlake performance and the following summer I saw him at an outdoor arena where I could barely see the stage. Isbell opened for him

I though Nashville Sound was one of his best, but the new one is my least favorite by a long shot.

Uncle Tupelo was so fricking good. Speaking of traditional sounding artists with lefty politics - I drove around yesterday afternoon listening to March 16 - 20, 1992 just loving it despite all the “capitalism is satan!” Stuff on there

My favorite out of the bunch. I like Isbells music but his hubris has turned me off lately and I agree with him politically on most topics.
Isbell could certainly learn a thing from Zach Bryan about humility.
The guy is a straight punk rock star and he doesn’t even know it.

Isbell didn’t leave, he got thrown out
It was his Ozzie getting thrown out of Black Sabbath moment.
He got kicked out of DBT for drinking too much

Glad somebody else likes him. I think he’s great and most people I refer to him are like “meh he’s ok... but have you heard the new Luke Bryant or Florida Georgia Line!”

Oh I’m aware. It was also the coke. I think I’m defensive of Isbell mostly because we both got sober at the same time and his albums Southeastern and Something more than free got me through those early years
