What does this mean exactly? Serious question.

I'm on board with kicking them out if the G8. Restarting our missile defense shield, maybe parking a couple of carriers in the eastern Med. and large scale military exercises in Poland or Romania just to let them know we could end this if we wanted to.

kicking them out of the G8, bringing UN resoulutions against them even though they would veto it, it would expose their "protecting ethnic Russian" claim.

Also I would do this as part of what I mean letting them know we are serious that we would get involved militarily if we had to (assuming fighting broke out and Ukraine asked for NATO's help).

Have 15 billion in aid ready to smooth transition of Russia cutting off economic trade. Begin moving supplies and peacekeepers into the country. Skip G-8 with Russia with threat to kick them out. Start new talks of missile defense. Begin moving support to remove Russia from WTO.

Maybe some of this isn't possible but find ways to hurt Russia economically.

Yes, the point would be to cause discomfort in the population, stop issuing visas to Russians so they can not travel, limit food exports to Russia, stop trading with them and the economy drops like a rock.

Europe would pay the price of this in lack of imported fuel and loss of exports.

Also freeze the accounts of oligarchs connected to the government and government officials who have their loot "protected" overseas.

We can make Russia pay a big price if we desire.

I'm not saying we shouldn't do all that, but what would Russia's response be to crippling their economy? I could see them lashing out even more.

I agree w zombie. Pressure, diplomatic and economic, need to be started, yesterday. I do think the G8 and G20 option need to started as well. Reactivate the missle defense with Poland/Czeck Republic and use Georgias quest for NATO membership as a tool as well. I also would let it be known that the military option is on the table and would go as far as starting troop/asset movement in Poland and be very public about it.

We should do absolutely nothing. It has nothing to do with us and we should not get involved in any way.

Has anyone looked at if from this perspective -- Russia is doing what they're doing in response to what the US and western powers have done in the Ukraine.

If you think you're being told the truth think again.

Anything that happens will be to appease domestic political pressure and little real impact on Russia.

How long till some idiot says we should suspend trade with them??

Worked great in Iran, North Korea and Cuba didn't it.

Leave them alone and let those two countries work it out. But if leaders make threats to Russia ,the threats need to be followed thru with. Right now there arnt many leaders exactly frighten of threats coming out of the Whitehouse these days.

And what, pray tell has anyone from the West done in that part of the world, other than issue idle threats of "You better not do this or that"?

That is a great question. Honestly, at this point I think the best American can do, and probably should do, is simply not endorse the behavior and manipulate our economic dealings with Russia.

We don't have enough leverage over Russia and military force against Russia is not going to happen, especially not over the Ukraine who we could honestly give two shits about. The failure up this point is that we do not have a strong enough diplomatic and economic relationship with Russia to sway or dissuade them from doing anything. That is a failure of our government over the years and not one or two administrations.

Now with the recent issue between Russia and Ukraine Americans are seeing that "world superpower" status they have taken for granted dissolve right in front of their eyes. Unfortunately the only card the USGOV has to play is some sort of half-assed, pointless military intervention. I think the USGOV is smart enough to know that won't be any good for their long term survival.

As far as Russia lashing out, I don't see any of this resulting in much more than the embarrassment of the USGOV, which frankly could use some of that IMO. Russia is just pulling the curtain back on our reality, and I don't really give a shite.
