His actions have tipped the scale back into favor of Assad, the ally of Iran.

Dude, Russia created that terrorist group which used that part of Syria as a safe haven. Late 90's Turkey got fed up and frick you Syria, we are going to invade and clean up that Shiite if you don't. Syria bucked up and did it.
The only thing that the U.S. was doing with a double handful of special operators, after defeating ISIS, was being a placeholder for Syria/Russia.
