Gold only has the worth that people place on it. What are gold's uses? It has a fraction of the conductivity of silver and is only used for jewelry because the historical perception is that it is worth something due to it being shiny. Just the same as fiat, the perception of its worth equals the value of its worth. How can you look at fiat and say it has an illusion of value then look at gold and say it has real value?

Yes, it has many uses of very real value. Ask NASA or any scientist.

And why would that happen? Why? Explain why.

I can't speak for others but I would prefer any currency backed by anything of real value over fiat currency. Each to their own. I believe we should have a choice. Why would you oppose freedom of choice?

You have to be kidding. But I'm afraid you aren't. Look up the meaning of the word fiat.
FIAT:

an official order given by someone who has power : an order that must be followed

quote:

an authoritative determination : dictate

Gold has value regardless of what I say, believe, or dictate.

Of course it is. But if you don't "play ball" you get the military.
Only the staunchest Fascist could enjoy the slaughtering of women and children for the sake of maintaining its currency/power.
Furthermore, as I stated in an earlier thread, it literally makes me want to vomit to think about our best and bravest being thrust into harm's way to do the dirty work of the Federal Reserve in the guise of fighting terrorism.

is this gold's primary source of demand, driving its price? has it always been? what drove its value, say, to the writers of the Old Testament? was it so they could plate their HDMI cables with it?

what if one day everyone decided that gold sucked for jewelry and it became worthless for that use? how much of its current perceived value remain in your estimation?

If we ever have another standard based on gold, maybe you'll have the choice to keep your fiat money. It should be you right to do so.

I doubt anyone will stand in your way. Why would they?

We need competing currencies with at least one backed by something of real value...not perceived value.
Then what's stopping you from doing that?

It's not illegal to create private currencies in the U.S. as long as you don't call the currency "dollars" and as long as you don't make the currency so closely resemble USD that someone might mistake it for dollars, which would be against counterfeiting laws.

There has been a long running private currency operating in New Hampshire (I believe it's NH......it may be in Maine) that some retail stores there use along with the dollar.

So, if you believe people would prefer a gold or any other commodity backed currency, just do it. Just remember to pay your taxes on your new currency, but pay the taxes in dollars.

You'll be famous!!

I'm very well aware of scientific views on gold, you just don't get it. Investing at the level that my firm does means you have to analyze ALL aspects of something. Gold across the spectrum is pretty decent at doing a lot of things but not elite at doing anything. It can conduct electricity, but not as well as silver or copper. It works as a radiation shield and reflector for NASA space shuttles but they would rather have rare earth metals because they do a much better job. It's actually softer and more malleable than aluminum when its stretched, but again rare earths are better in this context as well. The advancement of materials science can find various metals and materials that do things better than gold. It has a perceptual technical demand as an inflation indicator against all currencies, but then last year when that view tanked out you say gold drop 28%.

I don't oppose freedom of speech. You said a currency backed by a commodity would win out. I asked you to explain why you say it with such absolutism. I've stated that we have had such a system and history has shown that is has flaws greater than fiat.

I'm done. You are far too stubborn and obviously have never spent any time in markets to know that if nobody wants to buy something, than it has no value. Value is nothing more than that which is determined by supply and demand. No demand means no value, its as simple as that. There is value for gold because there is demand for gold, so go buy it. We'll talk in a little while and you can tell me all about how "stable" its been.

Not an advocate.
In fact, I don't give a frick whether I use the dollar, the yuan, or a coon's turd, to buy a loaf of bread. It makes ZERO difference to me.
But the Federal Reserve will use the government to send its military to murder people if they/their country don't use/prop up the dollar.

Am I the only one who sees a problem with this?

Bitcoin is a commodity currency in that it trades entirely freely. There is no shortage of bitcoin---plenty of volatility but that is to be expected in any commodity in such relatively short supply.

If a currency the size of the US dollar traded as freely as bitcoin it would not be very volatile. I think we would be much better off with such a dollar than we are today and better than we would be with a gold backed dollar.

It is time to quit defending the fed. Their worst offense has not even been mentioned here today. Their worst offense of late has been providing the lost cost financing of Mr. Obama's, Mr. Reid and Mr. Bohner's government expansion.
