Is the commodification of everything a predictable outcome of capitalism?
Everything?
I mean no. Or, not necessarily.
Churches doing charity in a capitalist society wouldn't fall under "commodification".
But most things would be, yes.
quote:
Should any facet of society be exempt from commodification (ie healthcare, education, etc)?
No, public versions are worse.
Like many things in life you want to find a balance. Stare run blows. Complete free reign capitalism means monopolies which blow too.
You want just enough government regs to keep companies from getting too big and protections from them purchasing political power.
Unfortunately this is difficult to determine and likely varies industry to industry. Also our politicians are corrupt AF. They're openly performing insider trading in from of God and everyone. Nothing they touch will turn out well for anyone besides themselves.

I'm curious though, what is the alternative IYO?
Rehabilitation. Norway was successful in dramatically reducing their recidivism rates once their system shifted from punitive to rehabilitative.
quote:
In the 1990’s, Norway had a problem. Roughly 70% of all released prisoners recommitted crimes within two years of release. That rate is nearly equal to the recidivism rate in the United States today.
At that time, Norway’s prison system was structured similar to the prison system in the United States. It was built on the idea that punishment is a deterrent. Prisoners were often given lengthy sentences in harsh conditions to send a message to others.
However, Norwegian lawmakers realized that the existing system wasn’t working. Crime was high, as was recidivism. Prisons were plagued with assaults, riots, and escapes. The system needed reform.

Her post was valid in the context of your OP.
She was trolling me but that’s irrelevant.
My question was not an insult.
No offense meant to our resident genuis, but I view intelligence as extremely subjective and not dependent on formal education.
People do the best they can given their circumstances at any given moment. I’ve noticed curiosity in many of her posts which I regard as a sign of intelligence. I think mothers often lose sight of themselves and their desires Ann’s goals after doing the grind of being a mom and wife for so long.
Although I can see how my post could be misinterpreted as being petty, that was not my intention at all. My comment was genuine encouragement.

Inmates are exploited for free labor - a practice which can be traced back to Convict Leasing after the Civil War and can help explain our ballooning prison populations even as crime has decreased.
So thugs committing crimes has nothing to do with it, emma right?

Are you a dumb vapid count?
That's not meant to be insulting, BTW, so don't misinterpret it. It's encouragement.

You overestimate much of our population. This is certainly NOT true. Just another talking point.

You choose to assume the worst about people, which is your prerogative, but I live in a friendly universe.

It might be hard for someone like you to fathom that not everyone comes to a political discussion board to heckle strangers.

No, unlike you I am not a utopian but a realist.
Some people can self manage, some cannot. The ones who cannot do what they want, not what they need.
You made the fatal mistake most utopians do and thats assume that all mankind is good.

Like asking if they graduated from high school?
You accused me of being a grifter because I was part of a group of parents who started a charter school, so spare me the pearl clutching.

Yeah I did because you said you started and a charter school but it turned out you know very little about operating a charter school or education.

The lies we tell ourselves.
You are an extremely negative person who chooses to assume the worst about people while insulting everyone who doesn’t adopt your cynical modus operandi.

She's a caricature of the far left modern female.
They use their victimhood as a shield because they have no actual weapons.

You are the most victimized human in existence according to your posts.

Then link one of these posts.
ETA people call me different variations of mean on here almost every day for the most benign reasons, like suggesting people let their adult kids read books assigned to them in college.
