re: Is it a double standard the cops won't release the name of one of their own?

I understand why the cops name hasn't been released. But the double standard is real. Anytime an individual is arrested, even if they are not charged, their mugshot and name becomes public record.
Jails, PD's, and district attorneys offices have allowed for profit companies access to this data to publicly shame people into paying them money to remove their mugshots. For arrests that never even saw charges brought forth.

This will most definitely be the case if the cop is arrested.
This is more like when cops say "they have a person of interest" related to a crime but do not release the name until they are arrested.

Exactly, the cop hasn't been arrested yet.
In an open investigation, before any arrests have been made names are withheld all the time.

But they NEVER have any issue releasing a regular person's name.
How can they get away with this?
Thoughts?
You're absolutely correct. If an ordinary man kills another - even if it is justified - a police report is generated which is public knowledge and which has the shooter's name.

Rape victims?

That's just not true. Generally it is released but if there are reasons to believe harm could come to someone by releasing the name they withhold it until the investigation is complete

Of course it is, but cops live by a double standard. This comes as no surprise.

I don't have a problem with withholding the name for the sake of the family - there have been death threats to the family as well as the cop.
But good point in the OP - I hadn't thought of it that way.

Well Anon just released the name.... They sound confident they have it right and from what I saw on the OT, sounds like this person FB page has been deleted and other social accounts changed.

If it turned out that the cop was gay, you'd be screaming from the rooftops that they violated his rights by releasing his name. Don't lie.

Toddy has to have the worst record for posting untrue crap on this board.

I'm actually with the cops on not releasing his name right now. I do think they could have made a more definitive statement about holding his accountable if he was found to act inappropriately.
I also find it a double standard that they are releasing info(looter/riot arrestees, info that the officer had injuries to side of face) that paints the other side in a bad light.

Would releasing the cops name help us to get the truth? Would it change anything? Or could it just cause problems not just for the man, but his family?

Does anyone see the irony of this situation? Cops band together to protect their own. Inner city/ghetto residents ban together to protect their own.......neither side trusting the other. We have our own Middle East conflict in the heartland.

You don't think this causes any problem for Mike Brown's fmaily? The name of their child killer is being held secret.
