My point is that the city of BR is a city only in name - its really just a special district of the parish.
No, there are city judges. Only people that live inside the city limits vote for them.
There also is a City Constable.
There are City Police.
And then you have the BR Fire Department.

It may not be 50/50 but it's relatively close AND won't change unless St George gets it's own police. They'll come after your pocketbook for that.
It's not the amount of funding, it's the fact that certain parish residents are made to pay for services they aren't entitled to.
Now, I agree with you on St. George having its own police force. The organizers are full of crap if they think the new city will be primarily covered by EBRSO. It's going to cost a lot more to incorporate than they are letting on.
I'm not sure I'm in favor if it. I agree in principal that unincorporated BR gets screwed for the benefit of the city. But the lack of organization and short-sightedness of the organizers concerns me.

My suspicion is that getting control of those revenue streams has been the goal of this whole ordeal.
It's not. Had the ISD been approved, this would have never been an issue.

What would change? The sheriff services St. George now, why would that change?

What % of property tax revenues in EBR parish come from the proposed st george?
A ton of it comes from there as it is the upscale houses and suburbs as a whole that occupy the region. How much o you think comes fro the areas north of Florida besides chem plants?

This is somewhat true. There's a lot of retail going on in the unincorporated areas. These are the desired revenue streams.

Is the ExxonMobil refinery in the city limits?

No, they're special, but they won't be part of the new city of St. George.

Same here. However, the combativeness of the BR metro council and there tactics have pushed me, and i'm sure many others, towards incorporation as a new city. I've said it before. I like the idea behind forming a new city, but i want detailed information about the formation. But the fact that the first inclination by the city council was to call us "racists". Then when that didn't stick, "segregationists", really pissed me off. Then, i heard a debate on the radio between a city councilwoman and a St. George "official" and i was even more for it. The BR councilwoman sounded like a complete horses arse, while the st george guy sounded professional and actually had responses.
My opinion, frick the City council. They did this to themselves. If BR collapses because of this, then this says more about the governing of BR, than it does about the city of St. George.

I'm thinking we were too. The problem is, is that i can't find a break down of taxes paid by the unincorporated portions of the area. The only breakdowns i see are city vs. parish. There is no "unincorporated" breakdown that i can find. I'd appreciate someone giving me a link for that.

Bug man,
Follow this link to CATS' operating budget for 2014. It also shows 2012, and 2013 numbers.
CATS shows revenues coming from the following govt.sources:
Hotel/Motel Tax
General Parish transportation Fund
Property Tax (new tax that was passed)
Federal Govt.
CATS was subsidized out of the General Fund until this coming year, but now it isn't. BTW, what are they spending that money on now, but that's another story.
The budget............... LINK

Both BRPD and EBRSO are funded parish-wide and they have similar budgets.
Yet the BRPD doesn't cover the whole parish.
And how they use those budgets is vastly different. The BRPD for example uses the city parish garage for their maintenance and mechanic work. The EBRSO contracts out to a private vendor (Simpsons, if I remember correctly) at some savings.

I remember going to an anti-war "protest" in downtown BR in 2003ish or so.
BRPD outnumbered protesters about 2 to 1. THey circled like sharks for a bit, then stopped and got out. One of them came up to my future wife and I and lectured to us about the horrors of war (not sure he got the point of the protest). Then they wrote some girl a ticket for throwing down a cigarette butt, arrested some dude for having a dog without a permit (not kidding), and fricked off. Most pathetic show of force I've ever seen. These same cops would fall to bits if they had to work a single carnival parade in NOLA.

As has already been stated, a huge portion of the EBRSO's budget comes from within the city limits of Baton Rouge, and yet residents inside the city limits of Baton Rouge receive virtually zero benefit from that.
EBRSO covers the city? bullshite. The Sheriff's office has jurisdiction within the city but again, virtually zero presence.
The sheriff of every parish is pretty much like this. Although they receive taxes parishwide and have parishwide jurisdiction, they defer to municipal police departments within municipal limits. The sheriff does however oversee the parish prison that usually serves as the longterm jail for all aressted individuals awaiting trial in the parish and a majority of convicted criminals.

The sheriff is also the tax collector for property taxes. It's who you write the property tax check to.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff's dept is called "Bureau of the Treasury" - had no idea.
