So I was in Australia from April 7th to 16th. It was awesome and I would highly recommend spending some time there before you die. Beautiful country. Some of the laws though...not so much.

At one point, I had an Australian tell me if you were making home improvements and fell from a ladder, you would be taken to court if their version of OSHA found out about it. Insanity.

There is a law in New South Wales about holding Koalas. You can't do it. The same Australian man referred to his own state as a "nanny state". Can't argue with him.

The most ridiculous of them all was on Good Friday. Apparently they have a special law that is only valid one day of the year. My friend and I are gonna take a ferry on Sydney harbor during sunset, because views. And sure enough, we miss the ferry by 30 seconds. So we have 25 minutes to kill before the next one. We obviously think, oh hey let's find a cafe and get a quick beer. Nope. On Good Friday in Australia you can't order a beer unless you also order food. What the hell is this authoritarian bollocks? This is even worse than not being able to buy liquor on Sundays in Texas. At least we are consistent.

Also funny to note: They do not say shrimp. They say prawns.

Weren't there supposed to be a lot of Hollywood 'celebrities' who swore they'd go to Canada OR Australia after the President was elected? Are they down under yet?!?! They must be loving them laws!

But seriously though why would you even want to drink on an empty stomach anyway?

I looked at her wide eyed and literally said "This law is completely ridiculous and authoritarian." She just shrugged her shoulders and was like "Yeah sorry that's the law."

The koala overlords have spoken. Who are you to question them?

Just 1 beer. We had been at the beach all day. Need to re-hydrate with beer.

The local councils there can be little tinpot dictatorships. For example, you can't even put a little garden shed up in your yard without council approval. People do it anyway, but if you piss your neighbor off, all they have to do is dob you in. Want to take a tree out of your yard? Forget about it unless you want to jump through an insane amount of hoops. This is in New South Wales anyways.

Even so, I enjoyed living there. Really great years and I do get homesick for it.

Oh and frick koalas. They can be mean little bastards that will scratch the frick out of you.

Sometime within the next 5 years (unless my career takes off to a point that I can't justify leaving my job) I plan on moving there for a year. Work visas are apparently as easy to get there as a travel visa. I want to move around the country for a year, live in 5 or 6 places and just do odd jobs to pay for room and board.

I have bad acid reflux I can't handle anything without food in my stomach first. Not alcohol, not caffeine, no type of medicine.
