That would be the only benefit, to attract retirees with income. Seniors aren't a big drain on services like police and schools, new Seniors would invest in property and they support the medical industry. But I'm not sure why seniors should pay less taxes than anyone else unless it created a net plus.

At the federal level:
If you don't make enough, it isn't taxable.

If you make over a certain limit, a portion of it is.

In Louisiana:
That portion that IS taxable at the federal level is not counted as income for tax purposes in Louisiana. That reduces the state's revenue about about $100m a year.

Also all public retirement income is excluded in LA. That costs us about another $130m a year.

No need to add another exemption on top of that.

If others have to pay state income tax the everyone regardless of age sex colour etc etc should have to pay too

Also everyone should have to pay regardless of income level

How about reduce everyone's tax, eliminate most government jobs, and us the tax revenue wisely?

Same thing here in Arkansas. I haven't paid state taxes in seven years.

Maybe for ultra high incomes but they get their taxes some way for the average walking around family. They either get it through property taxes, sales taxes, entertainment taxes or whatever. Mississippi is pretty tax friendly for retirees and we have a state income tax.

Such as; we get a break on homestead exemption once you reach 65 or 66 technically because you apply at 65 but goes into effect the following year. Pretty big chunk, too.

Something that isn’t yours to begin with can’t “cost” you.

Or Tennessee.

There is no need for state income tax.
