Muslims consider both Jews and Christians to be "People of the Book" alongside them
Mainstream Islamic scholars have always held to the notion that Christians and Jews are "People of the Book" and thus "better" than infidels. A minority of radicals have tended to gravitate toward "kill anyone who is not Muslim." Their numbers/followers have increased in recent history due to geopolitical conflict, primarily over control of the Holy Land.
