If you care to understand, you could probably talk to a few people that attended and ask them what motivated them to participate. You certainly would be able to gain an understanding, even if you don't agree with their reasoning. Or don't if you really don't give a frick, which I suspect is the case for many on here.
You certainly won't gain a better understanding discussing this on here with other people that don't understand.
