Louisiana already has the death penalty, it's just rarely used.

So, he is consistent in his beliefs. I share the same perspective. I think God alone should decide life and death. I've never understood the idea that "killing another person is wrong...so we're going to kill you to prove this." I also respect that good people disagree and have no issue with the death penalty. I didn't vote for Dixon, but I have no problem with this stance.

This is a bad take. Some folks are relatively militantly pro-life. I can respect that. I am probably closer to your position than McMakin's, just FTR.

Also, in Louisiana, the alternative to the death penalty is life in Angola (or St. Gabriel). I don't think that fits "off the hook" in anybody's dictionary.

That is my position as well. The death penalty is an anachronism.

I think the death penalty can be justified, like if there is no alternative way to protect society from the most evil among us then the death penalty is of merit.

In the modern world with super max prisons, it has no place.

Further I don't like giving government the power of life and death. Cases like George Stinney's and Cameron Todd Willingham's don't give me a lot of faith in the justice system.

Didn’t follow his campaign closely, but did he ever say he was pro-death penalty?

You forfeit that sanctity when you take another life.

Jesus obviously isn’t pro execution.

Well he had a chance to chime in here and chose not to.

Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us."

The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me, when you come into your kingdom."

He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

What?

How about Him saying “let those among you without sin cast the first stone”?

Your quoting of the interaction of Jesus on the cross is irrelevant.

So he draws parallels between an unborn child who is guilty of nothing and a murderer who chose to take another’s life?

What a fool.

I voted for him. I had no idea he had this view. Thank goodness he does- bc I agree with him. It makes sense he has this view, bc he’s Catholic. That’s not why I agree with him.

I used to believe in the death penalty.

Then I got a law degree and realized how often the courts get in wrong.

That’s not what he said. You made that up.

So now you're picking and choosing?

Why didn't he speak up and rebuke the penitent thief?

No.

The act of the state putting a murderer down makes it impossible for them to kill anyone else. That’s the point.
