Fiction? Orcs rule the night now across much of the country. Anybody accidentally walking into orc territory at night will become a victim. They will be lucky to escape alive.

I'm not familiar with this one but a list of 5 should definitely include something along these lines as well as something that more broadly addresses the powerful engine of the free market. Maybe The Wealth of Nations but I might look for something similar but more accessible.
Any of a number of excellent biographies of Benjamin Franklin.
