If Romney had owned the 47% comments, how does it change the 2012 election?

Romney: There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. And I mean, the president starts off with 48, 49, 48—he starts off with a huge number. These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect. And he’ll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. I mean that’s what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people—I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives. What I have to do is convince the 5 to 10 percent in the center that are independents that are thoughtful, that look at voting one way or the other depending upon in some cases emotion, whether they like the guy or not, what it looks like. I mean, when you ask those people…we do all these polls—I find it amazing—we poll all these people, see where you stand on the polls, but 45 percent of the people will go with a Republican, and 48 or 4…

This is probably the most honest and spot on assessment of the electorate by a big time politician. Instead of owning up to it, and in classic GOP fashion, Romney apologized. If Romney had followed the Trump playbook and doubled down, how does it affect him in 2012?

That was his "deplorable" moment.

47% of his voters were not on gov assistance.

Nothing he said after was going to help him.

That’s a different man, at that point.

Romney didn’t understand hat apologizing was weakness. And that voters wouldn’t respect it.

Maybe he wins.

It probably is closer to 35-42 ish but I do think for the most part he is spot on. The margin for error with Republicans is tiny

It'll be classic Romney for him to run away from these comments again when inevitably his Utah opponents revive them.

Obama was a stage managed candidate. And not the orator people said he was. He was no Bobby Kennedy.

He was vulnerable.

Romney had a small opening between the first debate massacre, Benghazi, and the initial problems with Obamacare. Instead of seizing upon these things, he tried to play nice and got burned.

I think you're certainly right as it pertains to 2008. Obama was vulnerable in 2012.

Only for himself. Obama didn't move the needle and even hurt others in 2010, 2014, and 2016 when he wasn't on the ballot. Hopefully they trot him out for 2018.

You mean the deep south. I wonder why.

Further, your point is bullshite. Romney's point really extends to states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, etc. in which the vast majority of areas are conservative but are subject to the hordes of welfare recipients in the cities.

It was his deplorable moment. He was right, there’s about 47% of families receiving govt assistance, or don’t pay taxes, and weren’t going to vote for someone who wanted to run on lowering taxes and entitlement reform. So, he wasn’t going to change their minds. Likewise, there were hard workers faced with increased tax burdens, working hard to raise families while the Govt saddled them with ever increasing taxes, and insurance premiums under Obamacare. You know, the deplorables. Every one knows the other sides ingrained voter base, but labeling them just hasn’t been good Politics, until Trump..He’s different, and refreshing...

Romney had Obama on the ropes and was leading in the polls after the 1st debate. Then the media and DNC colluded and pulled out the stops to get Romney in the 2nd debate. Ol Candy just so happened to have the transcript of the Benghazi speech on her desk? Ok..

I'm glad Romney lost, though because Trump wouldn't be President if Romney won.

Trump wouldn't have let Candy's bullshite stand. Romney took it and shut up
