If Iran had waited another 10 years to overthrow the Shah would the US intervene?

Fresh off the end of the Vietnam War in 1973 (when we pulled out militarily) and the fall of Saigon in 1975.

No way would Carter fully commit; and you saw his failed hostage rescue attempt.

Persian Gulf War started in late 1990 for the US.

Bumping for conversation on the topic.

If the timing was different, we would have dealt with Iran nearly 40 years ago.

Also, how much did the rest of the world take a turn for the worst between 1965-1975 (and the few years after) while we were mired in the Vietnam War?

Shah was a dead man walking by 1977. His cancer was too far along. He had been racked with it since the early 70's. His staff feared letting him know that he even had it.

I suspect Khomeinei et al, knew about it by 1977 and was putting things in place to cause what would start happening in 1978.

"Intervene" is a floating signifier. There was not a weaker foreign policy administration than Carter's in the entirety of the 20th century. Not until Kerry took over as Obama's SOS did we see anything akin to the ineptitude of Cyrus Vance as SOS.

So IMO, had Iran waited even 18mos, the situation may well have been very different, not necessarily in preservation of the Shah, but in outcome.

Intervened how? France housed and flew the Ayatollah to Tehran on a 747. At that time, they were probably happy simply because he wasn’t a communist. Ironically had the shah not been overthrown, his son would have taken over and his son today has wide popular support. Unfortunately a small band of fanatics ruin the party. Otherwise Iran would be a very successful country.

Like for Russia right now. If they had not gotten mired in Ukraine they might be a lot more active helping Iran right now.
