Friend,

Guns and the Bible do not mix. It is a disgusting image, and I hate to see that which is holy abused and used as an instrument of personal aggrandizing. Melt down thy guns and make some farming tools.

Yours,

P.S. For those that might rip out text from Scripture to justify a pro-weapons stance, have you not read the entire chapter of that scene from whence comes your textual justification? Please go read Luke 22 in its entirety.

Not long after Jesus tells his disciples to purchase a sword, we see one of his disciples having taken up that supposed edict by the word. Sword in hand, the disciple uses that instrument of death to cleave an ear from the servant of the high priest. Does Jesus approve? Absolutely not. Jesus rebukes him saying, "NO MORE OF THIS!" Jesus then heals the man's ear. Matthew's Gospel adds to that Gethsemane scene, " “Put your sword back in its place...for all who draw the sword will die by the sword."

Time and again, Jesus's disciples hear something Jesus says and they get it all wrong. I think this is such an example: Jesus tells them one thing about the sword, something I do not fully understand. But I see that they take him literally, and pick up the sword to use it violently, and only sentences after that oft-used justification for weapons, Jesus rebukes his disciples for having used those weapons.

In the end, the whole of Jesus' life was that of teaching his disciples to love and to become peacemakers on this earth, even at the cost of their very own lives.

If you have not a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.

This statement either makes no sense, or is baseless.

Depends on if you mean guns specifically or violence in general.

People who try to invoke the Bible in a political debate without knowing anything about it “make my dick itch” as inspector Todd would say.

Friend,

I think you, like Peter, misinterpreted what Jesus says regarding the sword in the Garden. I do not know exactly what Jesus meant in that passage about purchasing a sword, but I do suspect that you, like Jesus's first disciples misinterpret it. Why then, do we see Jesus, just moments later, telling one of his disciples, "No more of this!” after the disciple cuts off the ear of the high priest's servant? Jesus summarily heals the man's ear.

It is quite easy to misuse the words of Christ to fit one's own agenda. An entirely different path is it to read the words of Christ to find what he taught and lived so that we might repent from our selfish biases, and instead, to allow those divine teachings to mold us again in the divine image, cleansed from the sin of violence, lies, debauchery, and self interest.

Out of context maybe not the best picture, but I’m pretty sure it’s a reference to the “Clinging to their guns and Bibles” comment from Hildebeast, so it works.

When Jesus is in the garden and the soldiers come, Jesus told Peter to stand down not because using a weapon is terrible, but because His sacrifice was made willingly. If God hates weapons and war, then why did the Israelites sing about the Lord being a God of War (Exodus 15), celebrating His triumphs and the deaths of the Egyptians? Because this is God’s character, which is never changing, we should value this. We also should not only focus on this attribute of God, because He is gracious and peaceful. But, as we study scripture, we see that God is gracious in many circumstances but also waged war and opposes people in other circumstances.

In order to best understand God’s picture for weapons and fighting, you need to consider all of scripture and look at it as a whole, considering each verse and passage on the matter and coming to a logical conclusion based off the totality of scripture, not finding scripture that supports the narrative you like and dismissing or ignoring the other passages. All scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness (2 Tim 3:16).

A timely quote on this topic, not really biblical but applicable nonetheless...

“The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.”

It is quite easy to misuse the words of Christ to fit one's own agenda

1) Jesus clearly told them to arm themselves

2) He also clearly told Peter to sheath the sword, rather than to drop it, or give it up

3) And his clear intention for that action was to thwart Peters intervention in Christ being taken in as the sacrificial lamb

But he clearly wanted the apostles to be armed. And Jesus clearly instructed Peter to keep and bear his arms as his final instruction to him. So having an agenda goes both ways, especially when you openly admit that you dont understand why Jesus wanted them armed in the first place
