Previously delayed immigration raids in major cities are set to take place this weekend, but New Orleans will be temporarily unaffected by them, as the city deals with expected severe weather linked to Tropical Storm Barry.
City officials announced Thursday they had confirmed with Immigration and Customs Enforcement that all immigration enforcement actions would be temporarily suspended through the weekend in areas of Louisiana and Mississippi affected by the storm.
ICE spokesman Bryan Cox confirmed the city’s announcement.
“In consideration of these circumstances, ICE has temporarily suspended its routine targeted immigration enforcement activities in the storm-impacted area,” Cox said in a statement. “Further, there will be no immigration enforcement initiatives associated with evacuations or sheltering related to the storm, except in the event of a serious public safety threat.”
