I am always hopeful that funding will dry up with no deal.

The Department of Labor has over 17000 employees, a number that I'm guessing does not include thousands of contractors.
I'm not kidding when I say we could probably take an hour, eliminate 1000 GS positions and immediately pick up the slack with minimal restructuring.

I think you are correct.
In my wildest dreams the entire Dept would be eliminated, and the newly unemployed government workers forced to do something productive.

We could at least use a shutdown tomorrow as a test run to discover what areas we can do without and are thus expendable and can be cut.
Do something practical with it instead of what Obama did, using it to harass people.

with a no loopholes tax code we could pretty much eliminate the IRS other than collections.
Could set a date where returns have to be filled electronically and boom. We need nothing but collections folks. Outsource that the India and rent the IRS buildings.

The shutdown is great substantively, probably very problematic politically.
Oh well, we'll see what happens.
