How much do you think rap music/hip-hop hurt the culture of American Blacks?

Seems like if you look back on things over the last 30-40 years, rap culture and ghetto/thug/hiphop culture had a severely negative effect on black communities.
All it takes is a half-hour listening to the likes of Jackie Wilson, Martha Reeves, Otis Redding, etc. to realize how much more positive and upbeat black music was before hip hop came around.
Are black Americans seeing the full circle of the cultural seeds implanted 30-40 years ago? A culture that glorified violence, degeneracy, and pure unadulterated greed?
"frick tha police"...Isn't today's world just the reality of carrying out that message implanted by NWA decades ago?

I disagree strongly. I think it sent a lot of regressive messages that stagnated black Americans despite the fact that it was "edgy" and "cool".
Black music went from beautiful talented voices, tuxedos, and smiles to "attitude" and spitting as many curse words as possible into microphones while brandishing guns, money, and hoes with voluptuous asses.

The problems came before rap. Rap was just the most efficient way to convey a very real reality.

It is violent, misogynistic, simplistic nonsense and has been for decades. And, then the little white boys and girls emulate it and try to dance to it as well. Now, you have 40 year old white people jumping up at the first note of an old, tired, black, racist anti-cop song to dance at the local shite bar. Country’s headin’ for hell in a Maserati. Just sayin’.

It was influential on the culture. I don't think it's the primary problem, which was gangs and drug sales.

Glorifying prison culture and every single destructive social pathology may have been a bad strategy . Especially when combined with the dumbed down music itself. Losing the song structure in lieu of just a repeated groove, the degradation of the actual musicianship , tossing aside the elegance of 60s and 70s soul, the ridiculous greatness of funk , etc. It sad for the people who consume it and it’s sad that we’ve gone from Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Donnie Hathaway, EW&F , The Commodores, etc to this crap. It’s grape flavored bubblegum for low IQ dullards.

I never said I blamed hip hop. Obviously the issue is really complex, but don't act like it hasn't been a factor in some sense. Only a stupid person would think its irrelevant.
I saw with my own eyes how rap/hip-hop altered behaviors, it taught kids at a ripe and impressionable age what "cool" is/was.
Ever heard of confirmation bias? Black kids hear the music, they expect their lives to mirror the music. Did you ever hear any rap lyrics really discuss a SOLUTION to the problem? I just remember "frick the police, get money, get hoes".

Yes whites were bad about racism back in the 50's, but if the rap culture would have never taken foothold, things might be a lot different today.

Yes whites were bad about racism back in the 50's, but if the rap culture would have never taken foothold, things might be a lot different today.
I think its as simple as they turned a really bad environment/culture with problems that should have been acknowledged and addressed, and instead glorified the environment and turned a bunch of young blacks into people who wanted to make it big as a rapper or professional athlete instead of any other way. Ultimately when they achieved neither music or athletic stardom they turned to gangs and drug dealing.
