Well, there's the expert opinion of the day.

The diagnostic criteria changed drastically. It’s why the numbers have gone up so much. I know some typical leftist whack jobs that have gotttt er n diagnosed with autism in their 30s. They say it explains why they’re weird. It’s like being trans….but less committed. No offense meant to parents of children that are truly autistic.

We’ve so watered down the term autism that essentially every engineer would now qualify. It’s ridiculous. Autism is a developmental disorder. A top tennis player is not autistic just like Elon Musk is not autistic. All these people understand others emotions and can understand sarcasm and take the perspective of others. Being a nerd or highly focused on a skill is not autism.

It may be a part of why the numbers have gone up so much.
It ain't the only reason.

because people like that were probably just locked up and not studied
People who were diagnosed as autistic were absolutely institutionalized. They can’t function in the real world. A lot of kids diagnosed now were the weird kids back then. They grew out of it. Now we say they get better with therapy.

I'm really not trying to be an a-hole here, but how did you end up with a statistically extremely rare situation like this?
It’s probably not as rare as you would imagine.
Baton Rouge’s newest mayor has 2 sons that are both autistic and not mildly so. Obviously that’s only one example, but given the relatively high diagnosis rate of autism I’m sure it’s a more common occurrence than one would expect.
