Think kerry was undermining trump?

If he kept talking to Iran after we pulled out of the deal, yeah I think he did.

If we are still in the deal, and he’s telling them to stay in the deal, then probably not.

He told them that the current admin was "temporary" and new leadership would emerge to continue the deal.

Same question. I also don’t know if this is common practice. He’s not a government employee or official. He is a private citizen working from Trump in Trumps capacity as a private citizen. That’s different than say White House counsel.

Do you people REALLY think Presidents never use people they trust in private life as envoys, go betweens or whatever?

I mean hell. What was Jimmy Carter's official position when he was sent to negotiate with N. Korea?

I doubt any President, or for that matter, congress critter EXCLUSIVELY uses people on the govt payroll.

You’re asking me who I believe is telling the truth. Kerry said he didn’t, I believe Trump said he did. I honestly didn’t follow that whole thing closely enough to know. Everything i just wrote was based on quick google searches I just did a few minutes ago.

Kerry was there to support trump's agenda in your estimation?

If you keep reading this thread, you’ll see I explained it out. It does make perfect sense. I just don’t recall it in the past, but that’s primarily due to the increased media coverage on everything involving Ukraine right now as well as it being Rudy who is so well known.

Slightly related nugget, I was always a huge Rudy fan. He was my main choice back in the 2008 race until he put all his eggs in the Florida basket and it blew up in his face sadly.

I definitely believe he wanted Iran to stay in the deal, obviously since he brokered it. I don’t think that by itself undermines the US or the presidents agenda., at least until we withdrew from it.

ETA: this is the best and most civil conversation you and I have ever had. That makes me happy :)

Trump is the Head of the Executive Branch. He can hire or fire anyone he wants. Rudy works at the pleasure of the President.
But Rudy doesn’t work for the executive branch, and working for the President in a personal capacity does not make someone an employee of the client’s workplace.

And it’s not completely correct that the president can just hire anyone he wants since many positions require Senate confirmation. But regardless, Trump did not hire him to be an employee of the federal government, so it’s questionable to have give him roles that are for federal employees, especially given the nature of this specific role (working with a foreign nation to investigate US citizens) and the potential conflict with his official role.

Admittedly, I only looked at the Logan act and very briefly, but it was pretty vague and only said you needed “permission from the United State, directly or indirectly”. I’m sure that includes permission from the President.

i wouldn’t say that. Just that we haven’t had the best discourse. Usually one liners back and forth at each other.

OK. Thanks for the job recommendation.

That said, they probably wouldn’t like it that I would question it if a D was in office and did the same thing.

Regardless, I don’t have anything to support that Rudy’s role is breaking any laws or even any rules, I just think it’s a questionable under these circumstances, especially since he was already using Barr as well and could just have him do it solely without those issues.

I mean if one of the potential legal issues for Trump is that this arrangement was for his own personal gain, then using his personal attorney does not refute that, whereas just using Barr would.

I never knew his daughter married an Iranian American. And the best man at the wedding was the son of the Iranian foreign minister? And none of that was disclosed at his confirmation hearing for Secretary of State?

Yeah that’s messed up.
