How did Islam get the "religion of peace" nickname?

Every time there's a terrorist attack or some public mass shooting, funny how the perpetrator is never Buddhist or Hindu. Shouldn't these religions get first crack at "religion of peace" nickname? It's like naming the pitbull the "dog of peace" over the golden retriever. If you want to win a pitbull, fine. But don't sell it me this "peace" angle.
