I was told here yesterday that lumber tariffs were going to crash the market

#Housing starts rebounded by 4.6% in latest data, up from 1,286,000 in April to 1,350,000 in May, the fastest pace since July 2007.

It’s almost as if there are tons of factors that go into building costs and tons of factors that go into construction trends...and one factor changing doesn’t mean there are opposing trends elsewhere

I pointed this out to WildT in another thread but he didn't acknowledge it after insinuating what you said about lumber prices.

Barring any unforeseen delays, we should be adding another data point to the "residential construction completion" by the middle of next month.

1) It would take a while for homebuilders to feel the pinch on lumber. They would need to clear inventory, and in the end consumers would pay for it later on.

2) The cost of lumber is probably not a major factor in the cost of a home. I am sure its non trivial but there are so many other things involved in a home.

3) I would imagine labor costs would be a bigger drag on housing. Skilled construction labor is in short supply.

We definitely need more housing, at least where i live. Single family homes are in serious short supply.

Oh, I don't know. Gasoline has no problem jumping the shark when inclement weather is on the way. I don't know why the lumber market would be any different with supposedly doom and gloom on the horizon

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like the timeline from extraction to consumption is a lot faster for oil than it is for lumber.

This. Plus there is a exchange traded global market for oil. I do not believe this exists for lumber.

I would also guess the dollar spent on oil is several OMs of lumber.

I hear that the progressive thing to do now is to make houses out of glass.

Believe? You believed wrong.

Guess? You do that a lot.

Throw out potential next time for the trifecta.

July 2007 was right before the bubble popped in housing.
