If it’s a highly sought after internship, I get it. If it’s an internship at a small 4 person company yeah it is ridiculous

They're also doing all that to gather data on potential employees to eventually figure out the sweet spot to pay below market value for the most qualified employees. There are tons of fake job listings online to do just that.
