Louisiana Republican Treasurer John Schroder is telling supporters he is running for governor in 2023.
In a text to supporters obtained by USA Today Network, Schroder wrote: "Just wanted to let you know that the Schroder family has met, and we will be entering the governor's race. Timeline for announcement is not set yet, but I wanted to let you know."
USA Today Network is seeking comment from Schroder.
quote:
Schroder has spent more than a decade building his resume at the Capitol.
He spent 10 years in the Louisiana House of Representatives as part of the “fiscal hawks” and carried that theme of being a watchdog for taxpayers into a 2017 special election for state treasurer, which he won. Schroder easily won reelection in 2019.
quote:
Fellow statewide elected Republicans Attorney General Jeff Landry and Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser staked out their ground early for a 2023 gubernatorial run, though neither has made it official.
Landry sent an email to supporters two days after Edwards' reelection in 2019 basically declaring himself the linchpin of the GOP in Louisiana, while Nungesser told USA Today Network he would likely make the race on the same day Landry sent his email.

This is your first declared GOP candidate out the gate to position themselves as the 3rd option for conservatives in Louisiana not wanting to align with the Landry or Nungesser camps.
We’ll see if there’s more to come.
Meanwhile…BigJim…

Phew, fricking finally. The adult in the room.

I will support John Schroder if my only two options are fat frick and tin can.

I like him..... He is a simple man who holds strict conservative beliefs.... Which is why he stands zero chance at actually getting elected......

My mom lives across the street from him and known for years.
Great guy in and out. And happy he is running.

I’m not saying he’s not the best option that we’ll have but he’s still not what we need.

Oh...this will be seen as an act of war. I bet Landry camp starts making it ugly very quickly, though the past two Gubernatorial Elections could hopefully give some pause to that scorched earth strategy.

If his only promise is being fiscally responsible and level headed, thats miles away better than what we have had.

Could you elaborate on this please? What is it that we need? Correct me if I’m wrong but he’s not exactly a swamp rat like others and he’s definitely not a former democrat changing to republican to get elected like most of our legislators did at some point. Genuinely curious.

Jindal proved promises mean nothing. I hope he’s willing to do what’s right and not take a similar path.

how does a state like LA, a state that goes red in senate, house, and presidency, elect someone like JBE?

And. Here. We. Go.
He's the most fiscal conservative of the rumored candidates. Which I like.
But social issues are what get conservatives to the polls in LA, and I'm not sure where he stands on those.
But this is a good development. Now we can start to dig into his background, see where he stands on issues, etc.

1) Candidates matter
2) Louisiana likes governors who give them free stuff

Got the chance to meet him at a meet-and-greet a few years ago. He is someone who's a genuine fiscal conservative who wants to bring opportunity back to the state. Plus, he doesn't come off as that typical Louisiana "politician" who rhymes his words and annunciates rhetoric to sound good which, in itself, is a breath of fresh air.

It’s based on comments I’ve heard him make in private. It’s certainly not enough to write him off or refuse to vote for him but was enough to make me question his motives and ethics.

I know how Nungesser will react. He'll hit the buffet for a second plate.

1- Vitter camp made lots of other Republicans very mad. Some maybe justified, but in other ways, some just offended he called them out on their BS (like Jindal camp).
2- It's the rural, "socially conservative" Democrat effect. Lots of Trump voters who still think Edwin Edwards was a god-send to Louisiana citizens saw similarities between JBE and EWE, and they pulled the lever.
