We import a large amount of oil because many/most of our refineries were retooled to process heavy crude from Venezuela, the Middle East, and, more recently, the Canadian Tar Sands. Most of the “new”oil being produced in the US (fracking) is akin to Louisiana Sweet, which is much lighter, and has to be processed differently. So we export some of that, and import some of the heavier feedstock, as we’ve done for decades. And EPA and taxpayer funded NGO’s make flipping from one setup to the other expensive and time consuming.
