Have you ever noticed that the media covers politics like professional wrestling?

The Republicans(and conservatives) are always covered like heels. The coverage is aimed at getting the audience to boo them, hate them, and despise them.

The Democrats(and the left) are always covered like the faces. The coverage is aimed at getting the audience to cheer them, praise them, and love them.

Stories are put out there to further advance this dynamic just like in wrestling. Evil Republicans poisoned the lake. Heroic Democrats championing the poor. Evil Republicans jailing immigrants and separating families. Heroic Democrats putting a stop to that. Democrats are coming to save the day from the evil Republicans just like Hogan used to come in and save the day from whatever heel he was feuding with.

The problem, is that in wrestling, heels can get over with the crowd. That's how Republicans, and Trump, still win elections.

Trump is basically an anti-hero. Similar to Stone Cold Steve Austin, or Becky Lynch today. Their actions are actions of a heel, but they are wildly popular with the crowd and cheered.

Eric Bischoff TED Talk on how media is like pro wrestling

ETA: The biggest heel in WWE is Daniel Bryan, a vegan, tree huggging SJW liberal who’s trying to impose his views on the fans. He even remade the championship belt out of hemp!

You realize politicians are like professional wrestlers. They put on a show in front of cameras. But off stage they eat and drink together.

When I was in college I had a drama class where the teacher was some grad student working on his phd. His dissertation was about looking at the 2000 presidential election as a drama. It was pretty interesting.

Was a face and pushed as such. He was the hard nosed good ole baw fricking with ownership. Vince was the heel. Not sure your metaphor works.

The point about politics presented like entertainment is, of course, valid.

I was never a big Daniel Bryan fan but his new gimmick has me laughing every Tuesday and has turned me into a mark for him

He wasn't a pure white meat baby face though.

Baby faces are boring though. Trump shows us that. He gets attention, positive and negative, by saying ridiculous things.

Everybody wants to be the guy flipping the boss off and giving him a stunner. I'll grant you that's why Trump resonated with so many, but the connect of how he's cast in the media doesn't work. Austin was pushed as a face. Trump you contend is presented as a heel.

*I don't know why this minor detail mattered enough to me to respond*

Jim Ross would have told us it's a slobber knocker during the election. Laughable now but we might see a day where WWE stars get roles as TV anchors.
