I’ve heard of a theory that in place of a universal basic income, if unemployment ever gets that bad, all us citizens could possibly get a ‘credit’ for an allotment of AI usage. We could either use it ourselves or sell it to someone who will.

There is no solution... there's no stopping it. It's a race to the end.
If it's not us, it's China. Whatever the outcome, it's coming.
Folks act so surprised, the Bible provides a pretty good outline, yet so many refuse to acknowledge it.
Doesn't matter, what will be , will be and nothing is going to change it.

What can be done? Private companies utilizing it in their future business plans. Would a bill be passed that forces companies to hire people? A bill to maybe make ai and anything that uses ai illegal?
Idk what can be done to prevent millions of people from being out of jobs. Because corporations are always going to go for the most efficient means of making profit.
I won't lie, I would be ecstatic if the government would use ai to replace a lot of their mid level pencil pushers.

The question is, how are you preparing? The government is not a savior.

Learn to code? Sorry, AI will be doing all of the coding.

The only “solution” to the unemployment issue is a global ban on commercial use, which is obviously never happening
We cannot afford to turn that spigot off now domestically while it’s early or we will lose competitiveness to the ones that don’t give af (China)
In the absence of a ban, usage taxes that get returned to the unemployed are one option, but that’s not a fix and creates moral hazard in the long term. And something like UBI is merely a tax credit or refund that reduces net government funding
It’s refreshing to see that this board, as right-leaning and free market as we are, gets that this an existential issue. It’s not like some people’s wages are falling 10%, unemployment means 100%. And the unemployed aren’t all going to be only humanities majors we can just laugh at. It’s going to be most industries and levels to some extent
My hope is that it will only take a share of jobs, and that organizations are too complex for it to not create more / greater problems. While a lot of the AI rollout failure stories you might hear about are a function of poor implementation, some are just too ambitious given the nature of the work it’s intended to do. That said, you don’t hear as much about the successes, as those are found in consultant white papers and not news articles…but they are substantial
I used to be pessimistic about declining population trends but honestly I couldn’t be more relieved
