Mitch begged him not use the nuclear option. Mitch said “you will come to regret this decision”.
Without the nuclear option the democrats gifted DTJ, no way he gets Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett on the court.

Federal judiciary appointments once required 60 votes in the Senate to pass, per Senate rules. Dingy Harry (in 2013, iirc) changed that to a simple majority. When the GOP took back the Senate, they extended that to SCOTUS appointments.

His nuclear option was for judicial appointees excluding Supreme Court. At least that’s what I’ve been able to find.

He started the ball rolling downhill. Once he changed the rules for everything but the SC, it was easy to extend the goal posts a bit further. It wouldn't have happened had he not neutered the filibuster for everything else.
